Embracing Change

At some point in this rat race of life we forget that there is more that we can be doing, that we should be doing. While I don’t condone selfishness, I strongly believe in self improvement and self satisfaction. We are useless to anyone around us if we aren’t taking the time to self reflect and allow our selves to recognize the need for growth, whether its personally or professionally.

You can’t change the situation, but the situation can change you.
— Jay Shetty

I lost sight of that, or maybe I never really understood the concept until now. If we have no self satisfaction than what is driving us to do more, to do better each day. What type of example are we setting for others if we are so lost in our day to day and not actually even looking up to see the world evolving around us. We expect change when we are frustrated by things around us, but if we ourselves are unable to accept that we too have to change than there is no hope.

In November 2019, I made the decision to leave my job in public accounting. It had been a while that I had been noticing a lack of satisfaction and happiness in both my personal and professional life. I knew that my job was consuming my time more than I should have allowed it. I want to make it a point to recognize that public accounting is a demanding profession, but it was my responsibility to create and fight for the work-life balance I needed. I was afraid and unsure of what that even was supposed to be.

In the last few months that I have been out of the working world, I have spent a great deal of time reflecting. Of course I have had the opportunity to do some traveling, rebuild/build relationships with friends and family, and reconnect with the Florida sunshine. During all of this I have been reflecting about the things I want in life (personally and professionally), the way I want my days structured and where I would like to see my future. Mind you I understand and know that every day is a new day and new situations and changes could arise that might require me to adapt and readjust my expectations. For now while I wait to start working again, I am embracing the opportunity to rediscover my passions for cooking, dance, exercise, and just being outdoors.

The key through it all is to embrace change and find the positive in each situation to make it work in your favor. Find how each moment of change can help you grow as a person.
